What Do You Think It Means - 1707 Words

#BlackLivesMatter Have you heard of Black lives matter? If you did what do you think it means? According to The Post s analysis, the daily death toll so far for 2015 is close to 2.6. At that pace, police will have shot and killed nearly 1,000 people by the end of the year (Kindy, Fatal police shootings). This movement is an activist movement originating in the African-American community that campaigns against this violence and institutionalized racism towards Black people in the United States. The movement #BlackLivesMatter wants to promote overall justice by creating a safe environment, enforce the use of body cameras, and police training to overcome prejudice towards minorities. The movement began in 2013 in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of teen,Trayvon Martin. The movement became nationally recognized of its street demonstrations following the 2014 deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and Eric Garner in New York City(â€Å"Boundless † events 2012-present). The problem in society are the people that are suppose to â€Å"protect† us are the ones using their power to kill people. For example, the NYPD officer who put Eric Garner in a chokehold for approximately 15 to 19 seconds while arresting him for allegedly selling cigarettes. â€Å"NYPD policy prohibits the use of chokehold and the video shows Garner repeatedly telling the officer â€Å"I can’t breathe†(â€Å"Boundless†, Eric Garner).
